Welcome to Middle School Physical Education!

While the overriding goal of the Middle School Physical Education Program is to improve physical fitness, the secondary goals of sportsmanship and fun are also emphasized. In the middle school, physical education is an opportunity for our students to experience competition and cooperation in a supportive environment.

Throughout the year, physical education classes begin with a series of calisthenics and strength training exercises. After some additional stretching, a run on the school path is also part of the routine. Games and sports are then introduced and played which develop and/or build upon skills and general coordination. During games, teachers and players monitor the action to insure fair play and the safety of all. Students are encouraged to referee themselves to get a better appreciation of the game.

In the fall, we utilize the outdoor field as much as possible. Field games for the fall have included soccer, football, Frisbee, and capture the flag, among others. Basic skill instructions are provided for kicking and throwing and basic game rule education is supplied, when needed. All students are encouraged to participate fully.

During the winter months, the focus of the middle school physical education program is physical fitness and indoor games. Every week, the boys and girls alternate their gym period between the State College YMCA and the Community Room at the school. During PE at the school, students play supervised games such as floor hockey and dodge ball. While at the YMCA, students have the option of using the extensive weight/exercise room or receiving skill instruction and playing referred scrimmage games of basketball and indoor soccer.

Most importantly, we are having fun together. Our goal is to have our students work hard, use good listening ears, follow directions, encourage and help each other, and show care and compassion during our PE time.
