2/3 READING GOALS AND CONTENT
The 2/3 Reading Program takes children as they enter 2nd grade and continues individual and group instruction using a variety of methods including guided reading with leveled books and approaches from the phonics and whole language traditions. Reading instruction happens in specific lessons and across the curriculum with individuals, small groups, and the whole class.

Goals for the 2/3 Reading Program: We want children to…
  • grow in their love and appreciation of words and books.
  • develop the ability to choose and read books independently.
  • become fluent and self-monitored readers.
  • choose and enjoy reading for pleasure.
  • become interactive readers who question and make connections.
  • see the connections between reading and writing.
  • take advantage of opportunities to read in a variety of situations and genres.
  • use reading as a means to further knowledge and understanding.

Reading Content.
Reading is a skill, not a subject area. However, there are several skills that also serve as topics around which the 2/3 reading curriculum is organized:

  • reading strategies such as decoding, sight words, phonics, phonemic awareness, context clues
  • reading comprehension and making connections—self to text, text to text, text to world
  • analysis of text structure
  • vocabulary development
  • sustained independent reading
  • oral reading for fluency, expression, and stamina
  • research using non-fiction features such as index and table of contents
  • introduction to genres
  • participation in literature circles
  • independent reading
  • reading directions
  • read aloud and reading response (looking at parts of books and stories as a whole group)
