2/3 WRITING GOALS AND CONTENT

Goals for the 2/3 Writing Program: We want children to…

  • see writing as a powerful means of communication.
  • acquire and maintain an enthusiasm about writing.
  • experience self-expression through writing.
  • see themselves as capable authors.
  • be a part of a writing community.
  • participate in directed writing assignments with articulated expectations.
  • write poetry (painting a picture with words).
  • write with fluency and confidence.
  • write with legibility.
  • use correct spelling.
  • write across the curriculum, including non-fiction assignments connected to theme.
  • be able to write for a variety of purposes such as letters, reports, stories, poems.
  • consistently use basic writing conventions (grammar, spelling, beginning punctuation, capitalization, simple sentences).
  • understand and use each step in the writing process (planning, drafting, editing, revising, publishing).
  • write as a reader and consider audience understanding.
  • use basic text structure (beginning/middle/end, problem/solution, characters, sequencing) to create and organized piece.

Writing Content
Writing is a skill, not a subject area. However, there are several skills that also serve as topics around which the K/1 writing curriculum is organized:
  • spelling common words and word patterns
  • writing conventions
  • sentence and text structure
  • handwriting
  • writing for different purposes and in different styles
  • descriptive writing

2/3 Math Goals and Content

Overarching K-5 Math Goals: We want our students to…

  • develop logical/rational reasoning.
  • expand divergent thinking through problem-solving.
  • develop mental math skills.
  • acquire a variety of strategies when solving problems.
  • articulate/explain/write how a problem was solved.
  • understand, meaning to apply skills and knowledge to new and unfamiliar problems.
  • instill confidence in individual potential and ability in math.
  • develop deep thinking of math concepts.

Note: K-5 teachers use the Everyday Math Series from University of Chicago and other materials for their program.
