4th GRADE READING GOALS AND CONTENT
Most students enter the 4th grade reading program as independent readers ready for deeper skill mastery and exposure to a variety of written materials. Those students who need extra help and those students at an advanced level of reading are given individualized attention as needed to ensure reading independence and continued reading progress. Reading instruction happens in specific lessons and across the curriculum with individuals, small groups, and the whole class.

Goals for the 4th Grade Reading Program: We want children to…

  • begin reading for information in all subject areas.
  • identify different types of prose (narrative, persuasion, process, comparison, informative).
  • identify different poetic and literary devices used in poetry and prose.
  • identify plot structure, characterization, and setting.
  • identify different kinds of conflicts and how the authors choose to resolve them.
  • enjoy reading and discussing age appropriate novels with peers and teachers.
  • explore interpretation of poetry and literature.
  • enjoy reading and reciting poetry.
  • respond to reading both orally and in writing.

Reading Content
Reading is a skill, not a subject area. However, there are several skills that also serve as topics around which the 4th grade reading curriculum is organized:

  • reading short stories as a bridge to understand plot structure of novels
  • reading that includes the five types of prose
  • content reading in science and social studies (with written answers to comprehension questions)
  • three whole group novels with comprehension questions and class discussion
  • theme-related reading in social studies
  • literary and poetic devices – alliteration, simile, metaphor, meter, repetition
  • flashbacks, suspense techniques, and character motivations
  • reading for research with emphasis on finding reliable sources, identifying information needed and taking notes
  • introduction to citing sources
