K/1 Science Goals and Content
Overarching K-5 Science Goals: We want our students to…
  • think logically and critically like scientists.
  • ask questions and seek their own answers.
  • follow their own interests as well as the topic of the lesson.
  • make predictions and to draw conclusions.
  • be curious and follow their curiosity to discovery.
  • design and implement age-appropriate experiments.
  • communicate knowledge and demonstrate understanding.
  • respect and understand natural life and our planet.
K/1 Science Content Includes (in a two year rotation)
  • observation and sorting
  • use of simple instruments to measure length, weight, temperature
  • ‘Let’s see what happens’ activities that relate cause and effect
  • asking questions
  • states of matter: solids, liquids, gases
  • habitats and needs or organisms, life cycles
  • water cycle and watershed
  • sun and shadow, day and night
  • solar energy, light, heat
  • hygiene and nutrition
  • recycling, composting, and earth stewardship
  • food chains
  • weather and the seasons
  • topics related to themes such as Fire and Light, Air and Earth, Water Habitats, Changes
Not all science topics will be covered the same way in every classroom because, where possible, science topics are integrated with the classroom themes.
