Local Ecology and Community Studies (Tr. Bailey):
Throughout fall and spring months, students take one field trip per week as a part of their local ecology and community studies class. In the fall, students visit Shingletown Gap to perform ecological studies, while in the spring, students visit a local organic farm to learn the basics of agriculture and provide community service. Students are also required to design and complete a meaningful project related to the environment. Projects have included designing and planting native plant gardens, building green filters for the science room aquaria, and producing a Friends School-specific guide to the night sky.
-
The LifeSkills Program (Tr. Christy):
This program is devised to increase each student’s self esteem, ability to make decisions and solve problem, communicate effectively, manage anxiety, say no to unfair peer requests, resist advertising pressure and resist drug use.
-
Student Skills:
To support the academic achievement of middle school students, teachers kick off the year with a seminar on effective study skills, such as time management, organization, and note taking and test taking skills. Students begin using these skills on the first day of classes and practice them throughout the year. Each student also receives an assignment notebook in which to record homework, tests, and other due dates.
The entire middle school also takes a field trip together at the end of each school year. These trips have included overnight stays in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. Eighth graders also take a yearly end-of-school field trip to locales such as New York City and Rehoboth Beach. Finally, the entire school goes on an overnight camp-out together near the end of each school year.
